THE ORIGINS AND PHILOSOPHY

 

​To be a happy, healthy and balanced human being, we need to bring our full awareness and participation to our whole being. The following quote from Rummer Godden suggests exactly that.

"There is an Indian proverb that says that everyone is a house with four rooms: 

a physical, a mental, an emotional, and a spiritual.

Most of us tend to live in one room most of the time

but unless we go into every room every day,

even if only to keep it aired, 

we are not a complete person."

 

When you don't go into a room for a while, you are essentially cutting yourself off from that part of your whole self, your true self. Shraddha Yoga believes that every person has the capacity to perform yoga in a way that engages the whole being, all four rooms.  

Every person has a place deep inside themselves where they feel at home, where they feel comfortable and safe, without the need for excuses or judgements, where all is well. It is the place where peace and love and joy can be found. In every practice, that's where I want to help you arrive. Shraddha Yoga is not so much a style of yoga, as it is a way a being, in your practice and in your life.

THE PRINCIPLES

 

Shraddha Yoga is a way of connecting with your inner being by engaging all levels of your true self and finding your own inner wisdom. All styles and levels of yoga can be incorporated to enhance your experience and deepen your level of practice and commitment. Meditation tools and techniques can be employed to find a place of calm concentration, a place where focus can create momentum for whatever you desire, a place where peace can soothe a troubled mind or an aching heart. Yoga philosophy and your own spiritual tradition can bring both understanding and inspiration to your search for wholeness and wellbeing. All of these can be brought to bare in your practice and in your life for the purpose of health and wellbeing, for expansion of consciousness and for a deep sense of faith and abiding love, peace and joy.

I will create for you an exclusive and personal program according to your specific needs to help you: 

  • exercise your body 

  • expand your mind

  • recognize your emotions as your personal guidance system

  • hold the space to connect with Spirit in what ever way works for you 

 

I will select appropriate processes and techniques from my vast library of yoga and meditation tools to help you move into your inner search mode to find what brings you joy. To be a whole and healthy human being, we need joy in our lives but sometimes we don't even know what that means. Let's discover what brings you joy and then take some time to create an avenue, a sacred path really, to your deepest sense of wholeness, where your life is your own beautifully inspired creation.

HOW I APPLY IT

 

We will work together in  private sessions either in person or by telecommunication in a safe and healing environment of acceptance and understanding. It is paramount that you feel safe and comfortable so that you are open to mining the terrain of body, mind and soul and that you are energetically receptive to whatever wisdom is found there.

 

We start with a discovery session to get acquainted and to assess your needs. I will send you a questionnaire that will help focus the discussion and your answers will point us in the direction of the first level of exploration. 

After we agree on a timeframe and objectives, if you are happy with the direction and progress, we stay on track and mine a little deeper. If you desire a slightly different approach or the inclusion of a technique or practice that could enhance your experience and your learning, we add those things. It is really about developing a program that fits your needs and continually molding and reshaping it as your experience grows and your needs change.

I specialize in private sessions because I believe that I can serve you best if we can create an environment where you thrive, where the instruction and guidance is focused totally on you. I enjoy the intimacy of that kind of environment and the rapport that is built over time through trust.

 

Working together, I help you sort through your options, clarify any questions, discover what makes your heart sing and develop a program that is nourishing and sustaining, a program that can inspire you to reinvent yourself or clarify your identity, a program to help you through the rough patches of life, a program with a wide range that can challenge you to expand or give you space to be quiet and heal. AYURVEDA

Ayurveda literally means the Science of Life.

As a sister-science to Yoga, it is an ancient healing system from India,

revived from the ancient wisdom of the Vedic texts, dating back some 5,000 years.

 

THE PRINCIPLES 

Ayurveda promotes health in the body and balance in the mind through various practices, including: meditation, yoga asanas targeting specific organ systems, breathwork, dietary and lifestyle alignment for your dosha, mudras, pulse reading and marma therapy with essential oils. 

HOW IT WORKS  

 

These practices and other lifestyle practices combine to help you live in harmony with the rhythms and cycles of nature. They are a form of preventative medicine, allowing us to prevent or repair disease in a way that helps us to build strength and hardiness and to maintain balance. A central focus of Ayurveda is the individual constitution and working with diet to fine tune the digestive system so that the body becomes an efficient natural detoxification machine. When the digestive system is functioning optimally it works at a cellular level to take nutrients in and shed or release toxins, bringing balance and a heightened sense of health and wellbeing.

I work with each client on an individual basis. First we determine your constitution, or Dosha. I teach you the basic concepts of Ayurveda and develop a plan to first address major imbalances and then an ongoing program to keep you optimally healthy, through movement, diet and lifestyle.

After four decades in the pursuit of wellbeing, by mining the terrain of body,

mind and spirit, I have found my truth, my purpose and my strength.

As the founder and director of

Shraddha Yoga and Ayurveda,

 I have metaphorically opened my doors to helping others find their own

truth, purpose and strength.

 

 

I have been dedicated to yoga, in its broadest sense, since the mid 1970’s, beginning with a penetrating study of the intricacies and complexities of Yoga Philosophy through the daily practice of self-reflection and meditation. This was my sadhana for 20 years until I added yoga asanas in 1993. I became passionate about the physical benefits of an asana practice and awed by its power to transform one’s consciousness. In spite of the fact that yoga is thousands of years old, it still has such deep roots that it continues to feed and sustain us today and for that I am tremendously grateful.

Also in the early 90’s, I became aware of the ancient science of Ayurveda but did not really find my footing until nearly twenty years later. This is a science that promotes health in the body and balance in the mind through various practices, including meditation, yoga asanas targeting specific organ systems, breathwork, pulse reading and marma therapy with essential oils. Most recently, I have applied myself to the study and practice of Ayurveda, healing myself and helping others align with the rhythms and cycles of nature for the purpose of health and wellbeing.

 

Interwoven through the years and within my personal development, was a fascination with the origins and homeland of these invaluable ancient sciences of Yoga and Ayurveda. I have traveled many times to India, the land of spirit, in groups large and small, to distill the essence of the people and culture that are the keepers and guardians of this sacred knowledge. This is my favorite place on the planet and the place where I feel most at home. Yet my dharma is to be something of a conduit, helping to funnel that sacred knowledge into the western world where it is so dearly needed.

 

As the years bled one into another, I continued to develop my spiritual path, to heal my physical body, and to purify my consciousness. It has become a life-long process, and while it has been, at times, extremely challenging, testing the strength of my character and fortifying my will power, it has also been soul nourishing and fulfilling. In one of my college papers, I wrote: “my life is not about arriving somewhere or logging accomplishments, itʼs about filling in the holes, rounding off the sharp edges and making the hard parts soft.” This is my purpose and the bedrock of my dharma. My life’s work is simply to live life as fully and gracefully as I can manage and to help others do the same.

My teaching style changes to meet the individual student where they are -- sometimes with a vigorous practice, sometimes with softer movements and a sense of inquisitiveness and exploration, and often with a restorative, healing focus on letting go in meditation. I empower my clients to listen with compassion to their body, to move with intention and precision and to feel gratitude and respect for these amazing bodies. It will be an honor to be your guide as you mine the terrain of your own body, mind and soul for the purpose of carving out a sacred path to your deepest sense of wholeness and wellbeing.

In this program, I strap on my tool belt and teach you how to mine the terrain of body, mind and soul. We know the landscape, the surface of what is shown to the world but there is so much that is buried, so many caverns of mystery to explore, so many treasures to unearth. One of the most challenging experiences of a lifetime is finding yourself in a wilderness of thoughts and emotions seemingly caused by a situation that you feel ill-equipped to negotiate. Pretending it’s not there does not work and clearly, closing your eyes is not going to make it go away. 

 

This program is individually designed to help you, with the pickax of courage, carve out a path through the wilderness. With my vast toolbox of skills and processes, I will help you develop your own toolbox that will help you clear a path of forward movement. The first item on the agenda is to name the thing that has you troubled. Sometimes it already has a name, like a divorce or family crisis, a life-threatening illness, the loss of job, loved ones or home, but these are only the outward manifestations that you can point to. Perhaps they are of your own making but often they seem to be out of your control and not something that you would ever choose. In this program, we, you and I together, in a series of private sessions, focus not on that outward thing but on the real thing, the inner perception or reaction to the person or situation that has you in a snare, a trap of overwhelming proportions, where your whole life seems in peril.
